Types of Ringtones for Various Purposes

August 29th, 2011

Although we all use mobile phones for various purposes, the most common use is making or receiving a call. The saddest part of this use is that many of us still do not realize the importance of ringtones that play a vital role during an incoming call or message. Moreover, not many of us make an effort to set a specific tone for calls or messages, as most of us assume that the handset itself has a default one, which is totally OK.

Nevertheless, ringtones are significant! If you spend only few minutes in assigning each contact a different ringtone, you will be able to manage your life easily. Don’t you think so? It is not only beneficial, but it is also fun to do so if you are aware of the different types of ringtones that vary from phone to phone. So, let us check them out!

Monophonic Ringtones

Regarded as the simplest type in the world of ringtones, the monophonic tones feature plain tunes. Now, do not underestimate the power of being plain, as this is the reason why these tunes are available in all mobile phones today. These sound tones have tunes that render themselves at different frequencies, but in a sequence. For example, the single tone is the default message tone in many mobile phones that render itself in sequence but at high and low frequencies. In fact, the term monophonic itself means making one sound. However, due to the different frequencies during the play, it is possible to play melodic monophonic tunes. Most of these ringtones are composed via Ring Tones Text Transfer Language (RTTTL), a plain text or binary format that also allows uploading the ringtones on your handsets via data cable, Bluetooth, and infrared.

Polyphonic Ringtones

Next, the polyphonic ringtones, a bit superior than the above, boast a higher range of tones to be played at any given point of time. They can hold and play almost 16 tones in one go whose sequence generates a harmonic tune. This is why these ringtones are considered more pleasing than the monophonic ringtones. However, as compared to the monophonic that are present in all mobile phones, the polyphonic ones are present in the latest models only.

MP3 Ringtones

Another type is the Mp3 ringtones or real tones that more or less have the same sound as the one recorded on a CD. The name ‘real’ itself means actual life sounds such as baby crying, people laughing, and drums banging all of which you can now get for your mobile phones. The surprising part is that although the Mp3 music was not initially meant for the mobile phones, it is now the most demanded format for the smart phones of today. This is the reason why you can easily obtain the Mp3 ringtones from the Internet irrespective of the type of mobile phone. Depending on these types of ringtones, you can choose a perfect sound to distinguish between a personal and professional call.
